Econovation City Cluster (ECC)

Climate tech ・Deep tech

Focusing on environmental and energy issues in cities (regions), major companies and research institutes in Japan and overseas with a strong interest in decarbonization and resource recycling businesses and startups possessing innovative technologies co-create a business-creation cluster with Tokyo as a starting point, aiming to create businesses that can be used globally, thereby achieving both social issues resolution and economic impact.

As one of the world's largest innovation platforms, Plug and Play Japan Co., Ltd., which has been promoting open innovation between large companies and startups, will serve as the representative operator. In collaboration with major domestic energy companies and developers with extensive experience in urban development, we will create solutions for the three pillars of environmental energy and urban development in Tokyo: (1) urban decarbonization, (2) resource recycling within the city, and (3) innovative and sustainable green cities that can be expanded globally by promoting projects based on sustainable living.

For startups with environmental energy technologies, we will provide technical advice by research institutes and experts for the creation of individual collaboration projects with cluster companies and high-impact N-to-N collaboration projects, study of business creation workshops by cross-industry players, provide PoC and implementation fields, and support for funding. We will create more than 20 collaboration projects over 3 years, and aim to form a mechanism for sustainable support for startups after the completion of this project.

  • Search and match startups based on the common needs of multiple cluster companies and the individual needs of each cluster company, and support for implementation (Consideration of business creation workshops, provision of PoC and implementation fields, etc.)
  • Creation of collaborative projects by matching selected startups with non-cluster companies
  • Economic support for collaborative projects that contribute to the realization of the cluster's vision
  • Providing technical support, mentoring and investor referrals from research institutions and experts to startups

Focusing on solving urban issues related to environmental energy and decarbonization around the world, we will support startups possessing outstanding technologies and solutions in Japan and overseas together with large companies actively taking on the challenge of innovation in the field of environmental energy and urban development, and create 20 collaborative projects over 3 years. The case studies created in Tokyo through this project will be expanded to other local governments in Japan and globally, aiming to solve common global issues and create significant economic impact.
After the completion of this project, Tokyo will become an advanced city in the world of decarbonization and resource recycling, and challengers in this project area will gather in Tokyo from all over the world, aiming to form an ecosystem that will continue to create collaborative businesses.
